Gersha Arends :Born and raised in Queenstown, Eastern Cape.
Moved to JHB to study optometry at UJ, where I qualified from in 2010.
I worked in 2 different private practices over the years. My last job as an employee was for the franchise store that I now own (it’s been 2 years). Being a business owner by the time I turned 30, was a goal that I managed to achieve after many years of extra work, extra hours and trying to learn as much about the business and industry before taking it on in an owner’s capacity. Right from my first job, I always knew that I wanted to end up at this very place in time that I am right now
The decision with going with a franchise was a decision based on the support structure I’ve gained and of course brand association.
I knew that I wanted to be an Optometrist from when I was 13yrs old, wearing contact lenses at that age sparked my interest in it. It was a game changer for my self confidence, academic and sports performance at the time. Over the years I’ve developed a passion for fitting contact lenses and also the fashion aspect of eyewear (as can be seen on our Instagram page ). I think that having fashionable eyewear takes away the stigma of having eyesight problems. Making someone look good in their specs, helps me to help them how I really want, which is giving them the best optics that we can.
Outside of Optometry, I just completed a B.comm in Business management this year. I’m a Pilates instructor for a very popular gym group, been doing that for 10years now. I’m an amateur dance enthusiast. I take a class every now and then.
I’m very thankful that my education led me to enjoy some other things in life, like traveling. Since I love dancing and traveling, I try to take a dance class in different countries if I have the time, this is something I started 4 years ago. So far I’ve managed to do one in Brazil, New York City and Los Angeles.
I’m all for equal rights for women. An advocate for women of colour reaching for their dreams and living out their true potential and exploring their talents.

5. WHAT ARE SIGNS THAT CAN TELL THAT ONE NEEDS TO TEST THEIR EYES FOR GLASSES
There are day to day activities that help you detect that you have a challenge with your eyesight:
Frequent squinting: When you squint, you’re doing so because you want to reduce the extra light entering the eye and reduce the size of the blurred image. It can signal that you’re farsighted (seeing poorly close up) or nearsighted (seeing poorly far away).
Eye fatigue or strain: If your eye pain goes on for more than a few days, you have eye pain with eye movements or if your eyes seem to get tired from regular activities like watching TV or reading, get it checked out.
Frequent headaches: Getting frequent headaches may mean you have a vision problem. Headaches may be attributed to farsightedness or astigmatism. As your eyes strain to focus better, than can lead to headaches.
Blurred vision: Blurred vision can signal farsightedness or nearsightedness. Adults may notice it when they read, drive or sit at the computer. Kids may notice it while they’re reading, doing homework or at school.
Sitting close to the TV: You may be nearsighted if you sit close to the television. You’re compensating for being unable to see from far away by moving closer to the object (in this case the television images).
Eye rubbing: If you’re rubbing your eyes, you may have eye fatigue or eye strain. Glasses can help.
Reading with a book near your face or at arm’s length: How you hold a book or a menu can reveal if you have vision problems. You may put it near your face if you’re nearsighted. Or you might hold it at arm’s length if you’re farsighted.
Difficulty seeing at night: Various factors may trigger your troubles seeing in the dark such as cataracts or taking certain medications that cause night vision issues. Glasses can help if the problem is nearsightedness.
